There are so many things that can stop you from achieving goals or achieving success – in life, business, health, fitness, relationships, wellness and so much more..
But one thing that seems to be prevalent in many people I know, and I work with is…
This can show up in so many ways. Here are some ways I see it show up and some advice on how to overcome it.
- You don’t see yourself as successful, or worthy of success.
This one is huge. For you to be the best at what you want to be, you have to be able to visualize yourself doing that. You have to be able to wholeheartedly believe that you can do it, and be it. If there is doubt in your mind, you are self-sabotaging. And you are stopping yourself from succeeding in what you are setting out to do.
Stop it. You are worthy. You are enough. You can do it. Don’t you realize it is your birthright to be successful and abundant? You were born to be. Embrace it.
- You speak negatively towards yourself.
Would you say the words you say about yourself, about your best friend? Great question isn’t it. One of my favourite books is The 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. And my favourite agreement (even though they are all fantastic) is Be Impeccable with your Word.
Being impeccable with your word, is life-changing.
Remember thoughts become things and words give you wings. Words have energy. And they can manifest in multiple ways. Find the things you love about yourself, focus on them, and watch that pile of lovable things grow. Really pay attention to the words you are using about yourself; Are you being kind? Or are you setting yourself up for failure?

So compliment yourself, all day, every day.
- You don’t believe you can do it.
If I can do it, you can do it.
There is no other way to put it. Belief is absolutely number one. Go to work on it. Because until you believe, you will not achieve. It’s that simple.
- You forget the reasons why you set out to do something. This is self sabotage. By not reminding yourself daily of your WHY and your bigger picture, you take away from the drive and motivation to keep going.
Forget all the reasons why it won’t work, and remember the one reason why it will.
Every day, write your goals, see your vision, and keep the energy around that vision, bright and beautiful.
- You live in a state of Fear.
Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of not making it, fear of judgement, fear of not having enough time, or enough money. This state of fear, is self sabotage. This state of fear, is holding you back. This state of fear, is taking you in the wrong direction.
Be and Live from a place of trust. A place of belief. A place of positive energy. Remember that emotions are ‘energy in motion’. Fearing something that hasn’t even happened yet is wasted energy. Also, What you focus on expands, so make sure you are focusing on the success, the happiness, and the dream.
- You react in a state of crisis by seeking comfort and distraction with eating, drinking and other self-sabotaging behaviours.
Find alternatives and substitutes. In my stressed states, I used to head to the kitchen. It was fun for about 5 minutes until I felt sick and hated myself even more. Now I go to my journal, the beach or one of my favourites is grabbing my headphones and putting in a podcast or a meditation to turn around the energy completely.
Also be aware of things that trigger that stress – are your relationships healthy? Is there someone or something that really plays with your emotions or your self esteem? If so, get them out of your life.
- You compare yourself to others.
How many times have you heard ‘Comparison is the thief of joy’ … It’s also the thief of success. Stop comparing, and start focusing on yourself as a person. There is no one like you, no one better than you, no one less than you. Put your focus into YOUR journey, because yours looks very different to mine and mine looks very different to yours or anyone else’s. Comparison has a jealousy and icky energy about it. Stop comparing, start embracing the uniqueness and beauty of YOU. See the potential and abundance in your journey.
- You don’t ask for help.
Those 4 letters H E L P can be life-changing. It’s OK to ask for assistance, advice, support or help. This can be a huge pathway to learning and growth. So if you are feeling lost, or alone or confused about what you are doing or which way you are heading, reach out to a friend, find a mentor or coach, or join a group you know will be able to support you.
There are so many ways people are self-sabotaging their lives. It is important to recognize these areas of weakness and go to work on them. Because if you can dissolve this roadblock out of your journey, your world is about to be one of massive expansion, abundance, and success in whatever you want it to be.
